6 Easy Tips: Applying for an Internship

If you are looking for an internship, the first step starts with the resume and cover letter. This represents your first impression to a potential employer and is key to landing the interview.  It's easy to get excited about a position and make seemingly innocuous mistakes. However, these slight issues may be the difference between employment and a ramen noodle budget.

To help your resume stand out in a sea of other applicants, we've compiled six tips for success:

Qorvis MSLGROUP Goes Back to School for Black History Month

Every year, Cesar Chavez Public Charter School (PCS) organizes Black History Month Professionals Day, where black professionals from the greater Washington, D.C. area visit the school and speak to students about their educational and professional experiences. I was honored to be asked to present to two Chavez PCS classes of high school students for the event.

Initially, I signed up to participate as a favor for a good friend from college who is a teacher at the school. But, little did I know that I would be the one who was really impacted by my experiences that day.

The Problem with Wikipedia

Don’t get me wrong—Wikipedia is a wonderful innovation. (In fact, I was an early donor.) The website provides a vast encyclopedia, including previously unavailable information.

But, it has a weakness. The site does not allow corporations, individuals, or organizations to defend themselves transparently or submit information on their own behalf. This is a serious flaw and a real challenge for a site that has become a fundamental source for so many around the world.  This policy results in many articles on the site that are inaccurate or even blatantly false.

The Road to Women's Empowerment

The majority of the world's refugees are women and children, as Ann Richards (Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration) noted on March 7th. Eighty percent of Afghanistan's population is under the age of 40, remarked Myra Buvinic, a Senior Fellow with the United Nations (UN) Foundation and Vital Voices. These figures feed into a combination of powerful roadblocks that fight critical changes in behavior toward the empowerment of women.

Pop Culture Diplomacy

You may be sick and tired of the song “Gangnam Style,” but there is no denying that Korean pop artist Psy has become one of the ‘it’ stars of the past year—reportedly, even first daughters Sasha and Malia are fans. His status as a worldwide media sensation even scored him an invite to last weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. However temporary, the spotlight on Psy has positively promoted K-Pop and Korea.

Don't underestimate the power of the presidency

Qorvis Communications Employee Remembers Late U.S. Senator Who Jumpstarted His Career

Anyone who has spent more than a few minutes with me should know that one of the titles that I like to show off is that I am proud native of the Garden State, New Jersey. So it was with great sadness earlier this week that I learned about the passing of one of New Jersey’s greatest political icons, Senator Frank Lautenberg.

Senator Lautenberg, who was called “FRL” with reverence by staff, was THE giant in New Jersey politics for my entire life, and his life story reads like a living history of the 20th century in the United States.

Lessons from the Red Panda Social Media Overtake

RED PANDAMONIUM, am I right?

For two and a half hours on Monday, the Twitterverse held its breath—while feverishly typing in 140 characters—about the escape of the National Zoo’s red panda, Rusty.

How feverishly, you may wonder? A tweet sent out by the National Zoo at 11:51 a.m. was retweeted 3,572 times. On a day with an important Supreme Court ruling, a dropping Dow, a fleeing fugitive, and a Texas filibuster on an abortion bill, the red panda story stole the spotlight.

Did Google Revive the Three Martini Lunch?

In my latest post on Buzzfeed, I discuss @TomForemski's question on ZDNet, "Did Google just kill PR agencies?" in reference to the search engine's recent changes to the webmaster rules.

New Wave of Social Entrepreneurs Tackling Complex Issues

The term “social entrepreneur” is being tossed around so often that I’m beginning to fear it will become as meaningless as “green.”

A true entrepreneur looks a lot like Mark Zuckerberg or Sam Walton. He (or she) is willing to risk the loss of capital in an effort to make money. He is an innovator, a dreamer perhaps, who’s not afraid to try new things. But unlike Zuckerberg and Walton, a social entrepreneur is driven first by the need to create social impact. A financial return is, in other words, the means to the end – what’s necessary to sustain the social impact.
