Food-recovery technology receives award in two categories: Apps & Food
Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Awards honors businesses, policies, projects, and concepts that offer innovative solutions to the issues facing humanity. All finalists are highlighted in the magazine’s May issue.
“Qorvis is proud to work with a nonprofit like Food Rescue Hero. It’s exciting to envision the ways in which ‘tech for good’ can make the world a better place by effectively marrying technology, civic engagement, and public-private partnerships,” said Qorvis Communications Founder and President Michael Petruzzello. “We applaud our client, and their food-recovery technology, for this very well deserved recognition.”
Food Rescue Hero developed an Uber-like app that distributes unsold food from retail stores and wholesalers to food banks, community kitchens, and other institutions. As of January 2019, Food Rescue Hero has rescued more than five million pounds of surplus food and delivered it directly to people experiencing food insecurity.
“We’re thrilled to be recognized by Fast Company as part of its World Changing Ideas Awards,” said Food Rescue Hero Co-Founder and CEO Leah Lizarondo. “There is no reason to let 40 percent of food go to waste – that’s enough food to feed every person four times over. Our ‘20 Cities by 2020’ campaign, being rolled out with the help of Qorvis Communications, is making an impact in communities from coast to coast.”
A panel of distinguished judges selected winners and finalists from a pool of more than 2,000 entries. Honorees include Spinnova for its method of spinning wood into fiber, Planned Parenthood and Work & Co for its chatbot that discreetly answers kids’ questions, and Aira for its special set of glasses for people who are blind or have low vision.
